A small house with one rule: books you can hand to anyone.
A rushlight was the cheapest light there was — a reed dipped in fat, lit in ordinary kitchens by people who could not afford a candle. It didn't light a hall. It lit the work in front of you, and it was enough.
That is roughly what we're trying to do. Rushlight publishes clean, character-first fiction — stories with something under them, told plainly and told well. No grimness for its own sake, no shock as a substitute for craft, nothing you'd have to take back off a shelf because a child reached it first.
We publish four worlds, each with its own author and its own register: cozy fantasy, contemporary fiction, historical fiction of the early church, and the Second World War as a child met it. They read nothing alike. What they share is a conviction that ordinary people, in ordinary rooms, are worth writing about — and that the small, kept, unglamorous light is usually the one that matters.
