A Single Bow

Christian Apocalyptic Fictionliteraryadult
“It was only civic. Everyone said so.”

Outside Pyongyang, 1938. An hour down the road lies "the Jerusalem of the East," where a hundred steeples pray before the dawn. Yun Tae-jun is a young assistant pastor with a new daughter, a gift for prayer, and a future everyone can see. He is sure, comfortably sure, that his church will never bend.

Then the occupation's shrine order reaches the pulpits, and his own General Assembly rules — with tears, with footnotes, blessed by the teacher he most reveres — that the bow is national courtesy, not worship. A gesture. A way to keep the doors open.

On the shrine steps, for one clean moment, Tae-jun believes it. He bows, once, with everyone. Nothing happens. No thunder.

And then the cold comes — and he begins to understand that a single bow cannot be un-bowed. Only repented of.
