One of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Artemis stood a mile and a half outside Ephesus — and was far more than a sanctuary. It was the safest bank in the Aegean, holding deposits for private citizens, cities and kings; a place of asylum; and the engine of a whole trade in silver shrines and amulets sold to spring pilgrims. To be a craftsman in Ephesus was, one way or another, to work in its shadow.
