Behrouz

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

Behrouz

Behrouz is the Lydia-Gemeinde's electrician, a spare, upright man somewhere in his sixties, with grey at the temples and his reading glasses pushed up onto his forehead and forgotten there. The congregation took him in during the autumn the whole country was full of people who had walked a very long way, and he turned out, to their delight and slight embarrassment, to be able to mend anything with a plug on it. He fixes the hall's wiring for nothing but a cup of tea. He has his own chair at the Thursday table and his own mug with a faded Brandenburg Gate on it. His German is careful and excellent and his jokes are dry. It is a good country, he likes to say. He only remembers, sometimes, that a country that loves you is still a country.
