Berlin — Neukölln

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

Until I Come is set in present-day Berlin, in Neukölln: courtyard blocks and corner shops, buses sighing along Karl-Marx-Straße, the döner place across the road with its shutter up on a long June evening and a city that never quite goes dark. Sabine grew up on the other side of a wall that is gone now, in a country that watched its people, and the city she lives in today has made a point of the opposite. Berlin knows better than most what it costs to sort people into those who count and those who do not. So when a calm new order offers the world a single credential meant to leave no one outside, Germany is among the first to sign up, and calls it a triumph.
