Written for readers who have finished Book 1.
Clearing her late mother's flat, Sabine finds a box at the bottom of the sideboard, under the tablecloths. Beneath old documents, ration books soft as felt and a bundle of letters tied with darned wool lies a cheap school exercise book with grey card covers gone furry at the edges. On the front, in her grandmother Liesel's careful upright hand, are the words Woran ich mich erinnere, What I Remember. Inside are the years after the war in the east of a divided city, the queues and the cold, and a warm little congregation that got its people through. Sabine smiles to find her grandmother in a room so like her own church, reads ten pages, and sets it aside to read properly one day.
