Niko's Household (above the State Agora)

Written for readers who have finished Book 1.

A modest, respectable house in the streets above the State Agora — not one of the painted terrace houses of the rich, but a comfortable place with a courtyard at its heart, water off the city's aqueduct, and olive-oil lamps for the evening. The overseer of the Ephesian assembly works here, at a table in the courtyard, and half the business of a whole scattered community passes across it.
