Written for readers who have finished Book 1.
Ron Tasker is the bell captain at St Botolph's and Arthur's oldest friend; they have known each other sixty years. He runs a band of six, drills them on practice nights, and rings everything (weddings, funerals, a practice for the plain pleasure of it) with the same broad cheerful face and the same unhurried joy. He can hold a whole peal in his head. He takes his half at the end of the bar in the Coach & Horses with the paper folded, tells you the stay's mended and she rings sweet as owt now, and goes off down the church path whistling. There is not a straighter man in the parish, nor a kinder.
