Sabine Krüger

Sabine Krüger is past fifty-five, divorced, a hospice social worker in Neukölln, and for the first time in her life she is wanted. Three winters ago, on a cold night in a bad month, she walked into the Lydia-Gemeinde's parish hall for a bowl of soup, kept her coat on, and waited for someone to ask what she was doing there. Nobody asked. Now she has a hook for her coat, a place at the long table and a ladle in her hand on Thursdays. She grew up on the other side of a wall that is gone now, in a country that watched its people, and she still carries the habit in her shoulders. At the bedsides of the dying she has always known exactly what to do. Being chosen is newer, and she cannot quite believe it.
