The Pengelly farm in Devon is where the war sends Edie — a real working farm of livestock and seasons and make-do, and the alien world she has to learn from the mud up. Its kitchen holds the family's wireless, its long table the family's life, and slowly, against all her homesick resistance, it becomes the second home she never meant to have.
